Video chat safety and privacy
Check what you’re sharing before a call, and know how to leave if the conversation changes.
Browse online profilesCheck what the camera and mic can pick up
Look for mail with your address, work badges, school names, and photos in the background. Check reflections in mirrors or windows. If other people are within earshot, use headphones or switch to text.
Give the browser access to the devices needed for the chat you chose. Voice chat keeps the camera off. Text chat can start without either device.
Take a minute to check the name and photo on your profile, too. A work badge can stay out of frame while a reused profile photo or public username still identifies you elsewhere. Use the profile details you are comfortable sharing with a new person.
Keep control of the conversation
- Keep login codes, payment information, and your exact location out of the conversation.
- Ignore requests to install software, scan a QR code, or move to another app before you’re comfortable.
- Use the end-call or back control if the other person ignores your boundaries. You can leave without explaining.
Someone can record a call or take screenshots with another device. Share only what you’re comfortable having copied.
When a conversation changes
If someone asks you to prove your identity by reading out a verification code, leave the call and keep the code private. If a stranger pressures you to share a photo or follow a payment link, stop the conversation and use the reporting controls available to you.
Respond to unwanted contact
When available, use the report or block action from the profile or chat menu. A report is easier to review if it includes the profile, the time, and a short description of what happened. Keep personal information and sensitive images out of any extra material you send.
Review the community guidelines for conduct rules or visit the help center if you cannot find the right control.
If you cannot get back to the profile, write down the approximate time and where the interaction happened, such as a random call or a message. Use the support page for help finding the right next step.
Common questions
Does keeping my camera off make a chat private?
It keeps video out of the conversation. Your words, profile details, and anything you send can still be saved or shared.
How do I turn off future camera access?
Open your browser’s site settings and remove MimiChat’s camera permission. The browser may ask you again if you choose a video mode later.
What if somebody keeps contacting me?
Use the block option if it is shown and stop replying. If the contact continues, send support the profile, the approximate time, and a brief description. Keep private account details out of the report.
